Giving – Learning from Bible Examples
By Steven Lucas
In Mark 12:41-44 we read that as Jesus watched people in the temple give of their means, He saw there were many rich people who put in much. Then He noticed one poor widow who only threw in two mites. Jesus called for His disciples and explained to them that this poor widow had given more than all the rich. How could this be? They had given out of their abundance, but the poor widow had put in all that she had. Why did she do this? First, she truly loved God, and second, she had complete faith in Him. She knew and believed that God would take care of all her needs. We still serve that God today.
The second chapter of Acts tells of Peter and the apostles proclaiming the Gospel on Pentecost after Christ’s death, burial, and resurrection and of the Lord’s church being established. In chapter 4 we learn that Christians, including Barnabas, were selling their lands or homes and laying the money at the apostles’ feet so that the needs of their brethren could be met. Friends, that is love. In Galatians 6:10, God says, “Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all, especially the household of faith.”
What about the Macedonians? What a beautiful spirit these brethren had and what a beautiful lesson they showed us all! First, we learn that this church was in a great trial of affliction themselves and were in deep poverty. Yet, when their brethren were in need, did they say, “Sorry, but we are too poor to help.” No!! 2 Corinthians 8:1- 5 tells us that they first gave of themselves to the Lord and then gave to the apostles beyond their ability. This can happen when one’s heart is truly focused on God and His spiritual kingdom first.
How about us? Do we have the spirit of faith and giving that God would want for us? Let’s outdo each other in love and liberality!
